Bofrost Cup 2003 - Ladies LP

Denise Zimmermann was first to go, her jumps were: 3flip fall, 2z, 2l stumble out, 3t, 3s, 2a into 2t's. She has a straightline step sequence that is set to some upbeat perky music with a female chanting "LALALA...", her spirals could be held longer, but she did a rather good job varying her speed. Her program was set to some oriental style music, I had already seen it at Nebelhorn Trophy and really enjoyed it there, but unfortunately she had a worse skate here and also seemed to lack the confidence and energy that she had at Oberstdorf a bit, she wasn't as charismatic and overall just wasn't selling the program as well as at Nebelhorn Trophy. Too bad, because she has already shown that she can be a really stirring skater.

Julia Sebestyen wore a nice dress in dark red and black and skated to Tango music. Her jumps were: 3s, 3z, 3l (all three nice), 3t-2t, 3f saved, 3z fall, 2axel. Her speed was mediocre overall, she did a good forward spiral and your typical Morozov footwork (the beginning was I think the same as Michelle had in one of her programs last year) with lots of turns and toesteps. Overall it was a very nicely choreographed program and a very good skate for her.

Joannie Rochette started off with very good speed (overall I thought she was the second fastest skater in the competition, after Carolina Kostner, I was really impressed with her good basics and her good jump quality at this event). Her jumps were: 3l nice, 3f nice, 3t, 3z saved, 3f fall, 2a, 3t in sequence with 3s (just saved). I really adored her very soft and fluent style, she also did a good camel spin, a long spiral, solid layback with nice position, she had good ice coverage too. She was definitely my favorite of all the ladies in this competition, both in LP and exhibition, I liked her lyrical style and that the skating was nicely refined. And the program was very beautiful, a well-choreographed lyrical program that suits her skating style really well.

Elina Kettunen wore a blue & green dress. The music seemed to be something Irish, sometimes there was a flute and later some more energetic Irish sounding music. Her jumps: 3l, 2z, 2f, 3f, 3t step out, 3s step out, 2a. Her spirals were rather good, but her footwork did not really convince me. Not her best skate, it was a nice program though, even if not overly exciting.

Susanna Pöykiö did 3z-2t, 3t-2t, 2f after a little stumble during the entry, 2a, 3l, 3f fall, 2s. The music started off softly, but then went into something orchestral and later changed stylistically rather often. She has a lovely style, but I'm not too taken with this long program so far, the music was maybe a bit bombastic and messy and sometimes a bit jarring. She seemed a bit slower in the second half of the program, but her diagonal footwork was done with good speed. She finished a bit behind the music.

Carolina Kostner unfortunately had a very bad skate, jump-wise. She did: 3l, 3f fall, 3z fall, 3s-3t (fall on toeloop), 2a step out. Her speed is definitely great, she did a deep edge spiral and has very good ice coverage, some nice spin positions, she seemed to slow down a bit towards the end. The choreography of her program was detailed and she presented her lyrical program well. She really has a bit of a "different" style from the other ladies and I really enjoy her a lot, too bad she couldn't skate better here. One thing I did not like about her program was that while her footwork sequence was very well-done, the steps didn't seem to go with the music at all, they seemed quite totally unrelated to it IMO. But other than that I really like the program. As for her jumps, I don't think she "lost" them or has problems with "maturing", she had no big problems with them in the jumping contest, it looks more like a timing problem to me, maybe due to increased speed going into them during the program??? (But what do I know :P ) The lutz and flip just seem kind of totally "hit and miss", either easy and great or completely wrong, for example in the jumping contest her first 3flip attempt was a complete mess, she fell badly in EXACTLY the same way as she fell on the lutz and flip in the LP and then the second attempt in the jumping contest was totally easy and good.
