Bofrost Cup 2003 - Ladies Jump Competition

After dealing quite well with the public transport system during our last couple of events, this time Steffi and I of course managed to screw up pathetically again and got into the wrong tram (it really wasn't our fault though :P ) when we were trying to get to our hotel, meaning we lost nearly an hour overall. Luckily we had more than enough time until the competition started, so our roommate Katja probably was "suffering" the most, because she had to wait for us to arrive at the hotel for about an hour.

The competition was started with the ladies jumping contest this year, after we had heard a couple of boring, but luckily not too long speeches. Overall I can say that the jumping contest was really not that bad to watch (actually pretty interesting), even if I still would have preferred to see a regular short program. But it was ok, a bit like a mixture of watching practices and a high jumping contest (and I really like high jumping ;) )

The judges were sitting on the ice for the jumping part, holding up signs with numbers written on them, no fancy computers needed for this ;) The marks went from 1 to 5, it were seven judges and the highest and lowest always was thrown out. The skaters would advance to the next round if they achieved an overall score of 10 for their attempted element. They had 2 tries per round (but didn't have to try twice, if the first attempt was already good enough, it was their choice).

I think I won't write about this round for round, but rather report per skater. Stefka is already doing round per round reports anyway and since as always she's faster than I am, nobody would read mine anymore anyway :P

Here's a little overview of the rounds though:
Round 1: 3 salchow or 3 toeloop
Round 2: 3 salchow or 3 toeloop (not the same as in first round) in combo with a 2
Round 3: 3loop
Round 4: 3lutz or 3flip
Round 5: 3lutz or 3flip (not the same as in first round) in combo with a 2
Round 6: 3-3 combo
Round 7: 3-3-2 combo

Joannie Rochette had a good start into the contest, first landing an a bit shaky 3salchow and then doing a good one on the second attempt. In the next round she also had two good attempts with her 3t-2t combination and it was the same with both her 3loop attempts in Round 3. She was leading after this round and had especially impressed me with the high quality of her jumps so far. Unfortunately she stepped out of her first 3lutz attempt and had a touchdown on the second and did not manage to qualify for Round 4.

Denise Zimmermann didn't make it into the second round, because she stepped out of her first 3salchow attempt and doubled the second.

Carolina Kostner did a good 3salchow, went on to do a 3t-2t on the first attempt, did two successful 3loops (second one was better), fell badly on the first 3flip, but landed the second nicely, had a touchdown on the 3z on her first 3z-2t attempt, but completed the second attempt. In the next round she did a 3t-3t that was a bit shaky, but enough to advance to the final round. She was the only skater left there, but tried the combo anyway. On the first attempt, she did a 3flip (turn in between) - 3t-2loop (overrotated). In the second attempt, she managed the 3flip-3toeloop cleanly, but stepped out of the added double. Yet it were very good attempts.

Susanna Pöykiö did a soft 3salchow, followed by an overrotated second attempt. In the second round she had no problems with the 3t-2t. She completed two 3loops, I noted down that the second one was a bit better than the first. She completed two 3flips, on the first one she was a bit out of the axis, on the second one she had a bit of a legwrap, but other than that it was fine. She turned out of the 3z on her first 3z-2t attempt, but the second try was solid. Her 3t-3t attempts weren't that bad, but she 2footed/underrotated the second 3t on both of them and didn't advance to the last round.

Julia Sebestyen started with a solid 3salchow, had no problems with the 3t-2t, but stepped out of the first 3loop and fell on the second attempt.

Elina Kettunen did two ok 3toeloops, managed the 3s-2t in the first attempt (second try was 2s-2t), just saved the landing of her first 3loop, but did a better second attempt. Her 3flips were both solid, even if not very high. She managed an ok 3z-2t in the first attempt (second was 2z-2t). She attempted a 3t-3l combination, but the loop was heavily 2footed and only about 2 and a half rotation. She fell on the second attempt, but it looked better anyway.
